Description:

Lionel is a 10 year old lab/hound mix.  He so gentle and sweet and is a very handsome and happy boy! If you like labs you will love Lionel. He has all the great attributes of a lab-smart, loyal, friendly with everyone and just plain all around wonderful! He is a little older but you will not have to train him as he comes ready made to be a great new friend in your home.

Lionel (formerly known as Buddy) came in a couple of months ago as part of a horrible hoarding case.  He was COVERED in fleas and his only outdoor yard had grass higher than him.  Inside, the conditions were no better.  About half of the dogs never made it to the floor, but Lionel was a lucky one.  He had hair loss from the fleas, but otherwise he was fine.  He is a total sweetie, and gets along with other dogs really well.  He is a very nice dog, but we think got overlooked because being black and because of his hair loss at first.

He is fearful of men and will need a patient and loving home to help him learn that he is safe, and to help him build confidence.  He walks very easily on a leash, and seems more confident outdoors than in.  He has gained a few pounds since being in foster care, and likes his treats.

Lionel has had some problems with his hips and was in pain. With a week of a proper diet and lots of love, he is already showing great improvement. Until we can be confident that his pain is managed and he has healed, he should be kept from children and excitable dogs.  Right now, Lionel does not play, run, jump or do much barking.  He just wants to be close to his pack leader, and follows his current foster mom all over the house, often being underfoot.  A very busy and exciting household may be too much for him right now.  He drinks up the physical affection, and becomes almost trance-like if you scratch the right spot!  He does like other dogs, but doesn't seem interested in playing.
He rides beautifully in the car, and is fine with being crated.  He would love to sleep in a bed with someone, and is a calm guy that sleeps through the night.  I think that if he were in a family with a caring male that could work with him while he heals, it would be very beneficial for him.

The petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our dogs. Visual breed identification in dogs is unreliable so for most of the dogs we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.
