Update: 3/12/12

Nakita has come a long way since we have had her. The broken leg is healed and although she gets sore on it, we see a little improvement every day. Her puppies have been adopted and she is spayed. She is now wearing her summer coat. Nakita is not a big dog, less than 40 lbs, and on the slender side. Niki does bear emotional scars of the trauma she has been through. She is very leery of strangers, may only approach them after many minutes or even an hour. We have discovered she does not like small children and may be afraid of them. Nakita adopters will have to be warm and very patient people. A fenced yard is a must.

Nakita joined LDDR in October 2011!

Update 1/1/2012: A caring woman was driving home from work, in 6 lanes of expressway traffic, when she noticed a dog against the concrete median divider up ahead. She slowed down to check and “low and behold” the dog had survived crossing all this traffic and was still alive! She immediately stopped, noticed the dog was injured, and with the aid of a policeman passing by, placed the dog in her car. She immediately headed for the nearest after hours emergency vet clinic.

A thorough evaluation was performed which resulted in surprisingly good findings considering the circumstances. Nakita had a broken leg, many bumps and bruises, but her prognosis was good. The vet clinic was kind enough to give her filthy matted coat a good washing, picked the burrs out, and removed the mats before splinting the leg. This good Samaritan paid the bill, took Nakita home, and started working on finding a place for her to go. As it turned out, her vet is one of our rescue vets, who in turn contacted one of our foster volunteers. Of course we took her! How could we say no? Nakita’s leg was initially in a splint.

On a subsequent x-ray, 2 weeks later, it was discovered the fracture had shifted. This required a lengthy surgery to place several pins in her leg to align the bone correctly. Nakita is healing nicely with those pins in place.

Mid-December 2011, Nakita’s foster “mom” noticed Nakita was getting plump. (Foster mom accused foster dad of feeding her too many treats!) A few days later she “dropped” then had the “belly”. Long story short, on December 27, Nakita gave birth to 4 puppies, 3 girls and 1 boy. All are doing well. The pins will stay in her leg until after she weans the puppies and we anticipate a full recovery.

UPDATE: No children under 12 she seems to be  afraid of them .

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.

The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label.

Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.
