Dewey is so incredibly cute! He's also sweet, friendly to his people, small and young, though not a puppy (thank goodness!).  He's healthy, too!  So with all that?  He will get likely get many applications from nice, average adopters. Dewey needs a really super adopter, because his life was very strange before foster, and it makes him a bit special.

Dewey came from a hoarding situation.  Upon her death, the out of touch family of an older woman dog breeder turned hoarder unexpectedly inherited a home... with 56 small dogs in 2 feet of poop.  That was Dewey's life...before.  Dewey had never gone down one stair. Or through a doorway.  He had never gotten to "potty outside".

At the time of this writing, Dewey has been in foster care for a month.  He spent the first 10 days in his foster home never willingly going more than inches from his open crate door.  Unwillingly, he was forced to be much, MUCH cleaner, to have preventative wormer meds pushed into him, to be on a human lap with a fuzzy blanket daily, to go outside and enjoy sunshine and spring grass to lie on...It was all terrifying. Dewey was so shut down from the overload of "change", that for days and days he
would hardly eat.

Through all this trauma (which it certainly was, for him), Dewey never even SEEMED as if he might try bite his foster mom.  He is a gentle little guy!  He has gained skills (3 stairs to the potty yard!, one doorway!.... and that just yesterday). Dewey now loves his lap time, and he especially likes it if you make a tunnel of your fingers and let him poke his little nose in there for a second. It's so funny, and cute...but here's the key to his heart!   He also mightily "noses" his blankets before sleep.  He tolerates grooming, and under all the mats and dirt was a beautiful Black Merle coat.  He is likely a Poodle X Long haired Chihuahua mix.  He appears not to shed.  He will need regular grooming, as such dogs always do.  Dewey eats his food in minutes, twice a day like clockwork.  He plays with toys!  He absolutely LOVES to wrestle and play tag with his foster siblings.  His foster home had 3 little dogs before taking 3 more for LDDR from this hoarding situation, so he has playmates galore!  He's happy to play with anyone that will "go for it".  His antics and jumps, his paws in the air...it's like he's a little stage performer!  He's learned that the two oldest dogs aren't interested, and he stays out of their way.  He's a good "team player", and tries to fit in.

House training: Not there yet, not much progress to report.  Realize, Dewey must be physically taken outside to "go", as he only is starting to occasionally be brave enough to cross a doorway.  Dewey has pooped outside almost all the time in his first month of his new life, but unfortunately still pees inappropriately in the house.  Daily.  He has a neuter scheduled next week, and that often helps in that regard.  However, Dewey is in foster with two dogs from the same situation, but those fellows were already neutered...and that did not make house training easy for one of those two.  For this reason, his foster mom and LDDR will be looking hard for applicants that don't mind the prospect of imperfect house training for...as long as it takes!   Also important in Dewey's adopter is that they realize the depth of his lack of life experience.  He needs to learn everything as if he were a PUPPY.  But unfortunately, he lived years of deprivation, so he has much more fear in new situations than the average noodle head pup!  Anyone applying for Dewey should be able to love him as he is, and be patient while working with him for more dog "life skills".  If this sounds like you?  Apply fast!  His foster mom loves him, everyone that meets him will love him, but Dewey can only have one forever home.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.

The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label.

Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.
