Meet Waffles! PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE BIO BEFORE APPLYING.

He just turned 9 weeks old and is a pure bred Aussie. He has wild, puppy energy and LOVES to play. Please research the Australian Shepherd breed before considering him. An Aussie is not for everyone. Aussies are herding dogs and need a job to do. If an Aussie doesn't have cattle to herd, they're going to herd your kids; which will include nipping as that is how they were bred. He currently already tries to herd us and will nip at our legs.  If you're looking for a cute, cuddly puppy that will snuggle on the couch with you, Waffles is NOT a good fit. If you're looking for a dog to walk around the block and consider that exercise, Waffles is NOT a good fit. This dog needs a job.

Waffles was surrendered to us when his owner learned he has Mega-E.
Mega-E (Megaesophagus) is a disorder in dogs where the muscles of the esophagus fail and it cannot propel food or water into the stomach. The result is that ingested food sits in the esophagus within the chest cavity and never makes it to the stomach.

Waffles is on a canned food only diet! This is something that might continue for the rest of his life. He eats 2 cans a day right now, but that will increase as he gets bigger. Please make sure this is something you can afford. Waffles currently eats every 4 hours during the day. Please make sure your work schedule/life schedule allows for this. Once he is older this will decrease to 2x a day.

Once he eats standing upright, he needs to be held for 15-20 minutes afterwards. This helps food go to his stomach. Please make sure this is something you are physically capable of doing. We have a Baileys Chair for him, however, he is still young and wild and likes to jump out since it's a little big and he doesn't understand. This will be something you will need to work with him on. (Getting used to the chair.) When he's 40 lbs being held after eating will be a little difficult.

He is currently on a few different medicines that are helping him. He will need these indefinitely. Please make sure your budget allows for this.

Waffles is NOT a fit for an apartment. He is very, very LOUD when we leave him alone. He enjoys classical music when we leave him alone, but our normal "leave a Kong with peanut butter" trick is not an option for him. He cannot have any treats. If he is not tired, he will let you know. However, if he is, he sleeps from 10pm to 7am with no accidents.

He is learning to walk on a leash really well! He is almost fully potty trained. We are working on crate training. We are working on basic commands.

Last Day Dog Rescue now microchips all animals before adoption. Microchips are implanted between the animals shoulder blades and are a permanent form of identification. The microchips are registered to Last Day Dog Rescue with the adopter's info added once adopted. If the animal is ever lost and slips his/her collar/tags the microchip allows the finder to know who to contact if scanned for a microchip. Animals MUST still have a collar with tags on at all times. Per our contract, we take all our animals back if for any reason you can't keep your adopted animal.

Please understand the statements about this animal are based upon the foster home's evaluation of the animal. The animal might behave differently (negatively or positively) in your home. While the animal might be good with the current foster’s dogs, cats, children, etc., it may not be with your animal(s) or children. The animal may be housebroken or litter trained in the home of the foster but may relapse in your home. The animal is represented to the public as it performs in the foster home and any statements made regarding the animal are conditional to that foster home setting. Please understand that statements made regarding this animal are simply overviews and are not guaranteed.

The Petfinder.com system requires that we choose a predominant breed or breed mix for our animals. Visual breed identification in animals is unreliable so for most of the animals we are only guessing at predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each animal as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our animals based on personality, not by breed label.

Thank you for looking through our list of animals needing forever homes and choosing rescue first. We appreciate you stopping by.
